Hazardous Materials Response requests The district 5 team is based out of Pittsfield, Ma, and covers the Berkshire County area. For hazardous materials incidents: The number to contact the district 5 team is 413-448-9761, 413-448-9764. When activating the hazardous materials team they will need the following information at a minimum: The level of response requested (which tier level is being requested -see below). The location of the incident The materials and quantities involved Staging area designated by the incident commander for team vehicles and the response units. Call back number for the dispatch center or incident commander if possible Name of the incident commander The state hazardous materials response units involve 2 vehicles 4-1 is the Technical Operations Module (Tom) unit consisting of computers and communications, 4-2 Operational Response Unit (ORU) consists of mitigation equipment. A science response may consist of 2 technicians and the TOM unit A tier one response consists of five technicians and the TOM unit- (no entry operations). A tier two response consists of One TOM unit and one ORU unit, twenty technicians and five support personnel. A tier three response consists of long term operations- One TOM unit and one ORU on the scene and a second ORU available. A Tier four response is a multiple team operation. The District 5 haz-mat sterring committee is comprised of team leader Andy Stephenson Pittsfield Fire, Butch Garrity County Fire Coordinator, Ray Risley- Pittsfield Fire Chief, Ed McGowan Williamstown Fire Chief, Ted White Dalton Fire Chief, Larry Turner Hinsdale Fire Chief, Craig Rougeau North Adams Fire Chief, Mike Fitzpatrick Great Barrington Fire Chief-retired. The steering committee meets on a regular basis to review and guide team efforts.
